The body is a curious item. Its contextual multiplicity serves as an indicator to the vastness of philosophical or social thought and also experience. The concept of body interacts with ideas of fashion and how we might present ourselves to society. It can convey worth in terms of our economy, what are the hierarchies of form that capitalism might enact?
The beautiful and the grotesque are opposing values that can be both subjective and objective. Is the ‘grotesque’ disgusting? People differ in how sensitive they are to ‘disgust’. The more easily disgusted you are the more aversion you have to ‘outgroups’. Is the fetishisation of all things grotesque a subversive means to changing the status quo?
This exhibition explores perception of oneself, the posturing one might do, e.g. in front of a mirror or creating a self-portrait, the internal dialogues that are apparent when one is in comparison to societal standards, the mere dissection and interrogation of bodily forms and physicalities. There is an exploration of the gender binary and how the intention to expand upon it might serve as a way to expose antiquated notions of existence and representation.
